The school was established at the time when the Ministry of Education in Ghana had conceived the idea of de-boardenising schools to alleviate the problems of high boarding fees and to increase the intake of day students. It was also in response to meet the increasing demands for vacancies in secondary schools in the Tema Township, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, hence the conversion of the Community 4 No.2 Middle School into a model day secondary school known as Chemu Secondary School with the motto: 'Discipline and Hardwork'. The school was formally opened on the 12th of October 1982 with a double stream of 86 students.

Milestones

At 25, Chemu is a young school, but its achievements compare well with the highly classed schools in the country. The school has made remarkable and commendable academic progress since its inception. The school produces excellent results in examinations conducted for final year students by West African Examinations Council each year, especially in Science. It is no surprise that Chemu now has many of its products in the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions. Some also occupy prominent positions in the country.

A former Science student of Chemu, Angela Adomako-Ansah jointly designed and produced a burglar alarm at S.T.M.E. with a student from Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast in 2000. They exhibited this product at a Science Fair in Germany.

Chemu Secondary School took the third position in the National Mathematics and Science Quiz Competition in 2001. A former Science student from Chemu, Emmanuel Mensah gained admission to United World College, Canada, through a nation wide competitive examination in which he was adjudged the best in the country in year 2003. Another student from this school Kwesi Ntiamoah Adarkwa was adjudged the overall best student in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) that was conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in 2005. This same student was the national best student in Science for the SSSCE in 2005. The school was honoured with two shields; one for producing the best overall candidate in the examination and the other for the best candidate in Science. Master Ntiamoah Adarkwa is currently pursuing an engineering course in the United States of America.

Chemu Secondary School came first in the first ever Computer Programming competition that was organized by the Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence among Secondary Schools in Greater Accra Region. This competition was dubbed “I too can program 2005”
(ICAP 2005). The Students who took this perilous journey, the first of its kind, on behalf of the school were led by Harold Ntorinkansah Jnr, who was ably assisted by Daniel Amponsah Asante, Samuel Nortey Mensah, as well as Lloyd Crabbe. The school was rewarded with a computer and the contestants a mobile phone each. All the students who partook in this competition are now persuing IT bachelorettes.

This school engages in healthy competitions such as debate, symposia, Science and Mathematics Quiz and drama competitions with secondary schools through out the country and perform creditably well in most cases.

With all its achievement, Chemu Secondary School has no well built and adequately equipped Science laboratory. The two (2) rooms that have been converted to laboratories are still being used as the only laboratories in the school. The school therefore urgently needs a well built and equipped Science block.

The Technical Department produces furniture, metal products such as oven, stove etc. The Home Economics Department produces dresses and pastries. The Visual Arts Dept. produces ceramics and pottery and also does printing. The General Arts department lays good foundation in English and allied subjects.
